Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and given more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of the former president's move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The legal document highlights that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
