RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
