Greek Police Strengthen Protection Following Protests Targeting Israeli Passenger Liner

Hellenic officials have substantially boosted protective protocols at two key ports in an initiative to prevent demonstrators from approaching a cruise liner transporting visitors from Israel on an 11-day voyage around the Mediterranean.

Latest Protests Trigger Increased Protection

The heightened security at the Peloponnesian ports came after earlier rallies when the MS Crown Iris arrived in Kalamata recently. Earlier, passengers aboard the same vessel were unable to leave the ship and the ship was forced to divert to Cyprus after area inhabitants staged a protest on the Aegean isle of Syros.

"Despite the peace agreement, Israel is still continuing its attacks in Gaza," remarked Christina Lada who participated in the Kalamata protest. "Civilian, unarmed individuals are being fatally injured."

Tourist Experience and Public Sentiment

Aboard the ship, travelers witnessed as demonstrators in Kalamata chanted: "You need the authorities, you're not welcome in Greece."

A leading campaigner, who dedicated the summer to coordinating peace demonstrations throughout Greece, stated: "Citizens of Israel who approve of the decisions of their government aren't welcome here."

Geopolitical Background and Foreign Ties

A foreign policy analyst clarified: "Because of close location and our historical connections with the Arab world, the average Greek is more responsive to what is happening in Gaza than the average European from central or northern regions."

"Greece is in a difficult position," he elaborated. "The State of Israel is much more important for us as an ally than it is for most European states."

Commercial and Tourism Implications

National figures show that more than 600,000 tourists from Israel traveled to Greece in 2024, with projections of increased visitation this year. This substantial influx emphasizes the much-improved relationship between the two nations since the 1980s, when Greek leadership maintained a firmly pro-Palestinian policy.

Strategic Partnership and Geographic Factors

For the Greek government, Israel serves as not only a significant counterbalance to geopolitical adversary Turkey but also provides the added benefit of improved diplomatic access to Washington.

"The Hellenic Republic is not going to endanger its ties with Israel," remarked the expert. "But from a ethical standpoint we must be more embracing, more measured, more determined to show the improper actions of Israel in Gaza."

Growing Protest Movement and Global Response

The scale of the Greek demonstration campaign has surprised Israeli authorities. Recently, the country's foreign ministry advised visitors to remain inconspicuous, while national news outlets characterized Athens as a "paradise lost" due to protest markings appearing on edifices in the urban center.

The secretary-general of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece shared apprehension: "Naturally we're anxious. The kind of discourse we're hearing can quickly turn into antisemitic."

Upcoming Developments and Requests

Progressively, opponents have targeted Athens' strong connections with Israel. As many as 5,000 people recently journeyed to Crete to call for the shutdown of the Souda Bay naval installation, a NATO establishment that following the start of hostilities in Gaza has served as a key refuelling post for US naval vessels, combat aircraft and vessels bound for Israel.

"Our efforts have produced results," announced a movement organizer. "Our main demand, currently, is to stop any collaboration with Israel."
