The anticipation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team might be designing a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—elements that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
