In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
